Virginia, June 2025 Walkabout Outfitter, a locally owned, independent outdoor retailer located throughout Virginia celebrates 20 years of serving Virginia and beyond! Walkabout Outfitter’s story began in 2005.

Tina Miller opened her first store, Ladles & Linens, 29 years ago, and in 2004, she and Kirk Miller met over the purchase of a coffee maker. In 2005, the two joined forces to open Walkabout. What kismet! Walkabout’s first location opened in June 2005 in Lexington, VA. Since then, Tina and Kirk have opened locations in Roanoke, Harrisonburg, Richmond, Blacksburg, and Williamsburg. Through the difficulties that all small businesses faced in 2020, Tina and Kirk adapted and opened Walkabout’s online store to serve locals and beyond.

Through the years, Walkabout has been part of Tina and Kirk’s souls; they truly put love, sweat, tears, money, and precious time to sustain and build this small business. Tina, Kirk, and Walkabout endured ups and downs -- along the way they had two wonderful children, went through aggressive cancer treatment, sold Ladles & Linens, and avoided bankruptcy during COVID. Even with all the difficulties and obstacles, they laughed until their stomachs hurt, had so much fun with amazing co-workers, and loved every minute of Walkabout! 

To celebrate 20 years of Walkabout, they are celebrating BIG this June! Throughout the month of June, they will share throwback pictures from various store openings, co-workers past & present, milestones, and more. At the end of the month, they will have a grand celebration! A ribbon cutting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25^th at 1pm at Walkabout’s Lexington store. On Thursday, June 26^th at 7:30pm, they will host a Flash Sale on Facebook Live just like they did during the days of lockdown! Finally, Friday, June 27^th through Sunday, June 29^th they will have weekend celebrations at each Walkabout location filled with food, drinks, raffles, giveaways, and more! Their customers are the reason why Walkabout has thrived for 20 years, which is why they want to make a splash. Save the date to celebrate with Walkabout this June!
