The Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to announce the second year of our Commonwealth Conversations speaker series. This three-part series promises to deliver thought-provoking discussions featuring prominent figures, led by Colonial Williamsburg Foundation President, Cliff Fleet. Past speakers have included influential personalities such as Carly Fiorina, Senator Mark Warner, and BK Fulton.

Our inaugural speaker for this series is General John Jumper, who will share his insights in a conversation moderated by Cliff Fleet.

About General John Jumper

John Jumper joined the private sector in September 2005 following an extraordinary 39-year military career, including serving as the 17th Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force leading more than 700,000 active duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve and civilian members. As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he provided military advice directly to the President of the United States, the Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Council.

Prior to his position as Chief of Staff, General Jumper served as a wartime commander during conflicts in Iraq, Serbia and Kosovo. He also commanded Air Combat Command with headquarters at Langley AFB, Virginia and served as Senior Military Assistant to Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney and Secretary Les Aspin. He has accumulated 5000 flying hours that includes more than 1400 combat hours in Vietnam and the Middle East.

Following his service in the Air Force, John served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SAIC, then an $11B public company. During his tenure he led a transformational separation by creating a new public company, Leidos, where he served as Chairman and CEO until his retirement in 2014. He also served as lead director on the board of Rolls-Royce North America and as Chairman and CEO of the Museum of the American Revolution that opened in Philadelphia in 2017. John also served for eight years on the Board of Visitors of the Virginia Military Institute, including a term as President of the board.

He currently serves on three public company boards: Hyster-Yale Group, NACCO Industries, and Hamilton Beach Brands. He is also on the board of the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, and was recently appointed by Governor Youngkin to the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) where he serves as Chairman. John graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1966 with a degree in electrical engineering. He also earned an MBA from Golden Gate University in 1978.

Jumper and his wife, Ellen, live in Spotsylvania, Virginia. They have three daughters with families: Brigadier General Catherine Jumper, Commander of the Virginia Air National Guard; Janet Jumper, a critical care Nurse Practitioner; and Lt. Col. Melissa Jumper, an active duty civil engineer serving in the Pentagon. All have served in the Air Force and blessed the family with five grandchildren.
