Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg named a Platinum Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists

Recognition from National Nonprofit Highlights the Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg’s Commitment to Community through Transportation Equity

York County, VA — On February 25, 2026, the League of American Bicyclists recognized the Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg with a Platinum Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) award, earning it a place alongside more than 1,100 businesses across the country contributing to the movement to build a more Bicycle Friendly America for everyone. Notably, it is a rare accomplishment for a business to attain Platinum status on a very first application as did the Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg.\

“Across the country, businesses are getting creative in how they support people who bike,” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “From community gardens to medical centers to ice cream shops, Bicycle Friendly Businesses are showing that when you build biking into how you operate and how you show up locally, it pays off in healthier teams, happier customers, and stronger communities.”

The Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg joins a total of 1,117 current BFBs nationwide, including everything from government agencies, Fortune 500 companies, museums, hospitality establishments, bike shops, and other employers, all united in a commitment to transform American workplaces to be more welcoming to both customers and employees who bike. The Bicycle Friendly Business award recognizes an organization’s contributions in shifting up and accelerating the movement to build a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone.

“At the heart of this work is consistency,” continued Nesper. “Bicycle Friendly Businesses don’t treat biking as a one-time project. They build it into their policies, their benefits, and their culture. The Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg has shown what it looks like to stick with that commitment and make it part of how they operate every day.”

The Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg encourages bicycling as a transportation option and provides amenities such as DIY bike repair days with access to knowledgeable mechanics, tools and parts, plus community workshops and social rides. Through the sales of refurbished bikes donated to the Co-Op by the community, they fulfill their mission of donating bikes to people without the means of purchasing reliable transportation. This is accomplished through their numerous partnerships with other nonprofits, human services agencies, and educational institutions.

“Being bike friendly has built bridges for our entire community - including the most vulnerable among us.” shares Allison Jarvis, manager of the Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg. “The community donates bikes to us which our volunteers refurbish and sell at more affordable prices with the purpose of supporting our mission: addressing transportation equity. It’s an amazing model where everyone gets to play a part in lifting up and supporting each other - all thanks to bikes!”

As part of the BFB network, the Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg will have access to a variety of tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more welcoming to people who bike. When employees and volunteers bike, great things happen: upward mobility can become a reality for more people, community ties expand while carbon footprints decrease, and overall physical and mental well-being can improve!
