WATA Launches Liberty Fare Week to Promote New 30-Minute Service Frequency and Extended July 4 Service Hours

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) is making it easier than ever to ride public transit this summer with major service improvements beginning June 29.

Starting June 29, WATA will increase service frequency Monday through Friday on Routes 1 and 2, with buses arriving every 30 minutes throughout the day. This increased service will reduce waiting times, improve connectivity, and provide riders with more flexibility when traveling throughout the Greater Williamsburg area.

In addition, WATA will extend service hours on all routes and paratransit service until midnight on July 4 to help residents and visitors travel to Independence Day celebrations and fireworks events in downtown Williamsburg. Routes 1 and 2 will run 30-minute service on this day as well.

To celebrate the new service, WATA will host Liberty Fare Week from June 29 through July 5, allowing residents and visitors to ride all fixed routes and paratransit service at no cost.

“WATA is excited to launch these improvements as the Historic Triangle celebrates America’s 250th birthday,” said Matthew Scalia, WATA’s Executive Director. “Providing 30-minute service all day on two of our major routes is a significant step forward for public transit in the Williamsburg area, and I am grateful for the community’s support. I’m confident the Liberty Fare Week and extended hours on July 4th will encourage residents and visitors to discover how safe, convenient, and accessible our public transit system is while providing an alternative transportation option for community celebrations throughout the holiday week.”

The increased frequency represents the first phase of WATA's Transit Strategic Plan. The plan aims to invest new resources to improve frequency on at least half of WATA’s routes by 2030.

Riders are encouraged to review updated schedules and route information at www.gowata.org before traveling. Riders can also download the Transit app to plan trips, view real-time bus locations, receive service alerts, and purchase mobile tickets during normal service.
