WATA Seeks Public Feedback for Proposed Service Changes

WATA Seeks Public Feedback for Proposed Service Changes

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) is inviting the public to provide feedback on proposed service changes ahead of the opening of the WATA North Transit Center (WNTC), scheduled for September 2026.

Currently, four of WATA’s routes transfer in the space between the Walmart Supercenter and Lowe’s Home Improvement on E. Rochambeau Dr. Those routes will have to adjust their paths and schedules since the WNTC will serve as the new main transfer point.

The WNTC will provide amenities needed for both passengers and operators, as well as make transferring between routes easier, improve safety and accessibility, and help WATA provide more reliable service.

The proposed service changes are as follows:

Route 2: Will include service to Walmart on E Rochambeau Drive and Great Wolf Lodge before and after making transfers at the WNTC. This will be the only route serving these locations, with service provided in both route directions.

Route 4: Leaving the WNTC, the route will depart onto Mooretown Rd. Then it will make a left onto Lightfoot Rd. heading towards a new stop near the Apartments at Kelton Station.

Also, Stop 1318 – Centerville Rd at Opportunity Way will be relocated to the unused shelter on Opportunity Way near the Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) Historic Triangle Campus.

The route will turn right onto Opportunity Way from Centerville Rd. and enter the campus parking lot. It will then exit right back onto Opportunity Way to serve the shelter stop, cross Centerville Rd., into the Harris Teeter parking lot to serve the existing sheltered stop, and continue to cross Richmond Rd. onto Lightfoot Rd. From there, it will turn right onto Old Mooretown Rd. and continue to new stops at the Apartments at Kelton Station and Grande Oaks, and then the WNTC.

Route 7: Will no longer serve Walmart and Great Wolf Lodge. These stops will still be served by Route 2.

Route 9: Will no longer serve Walmart. This stop will still be served by Route 2.

Additionally, Route 11 will be making major service changes:

Route 11: Will begin at Stop 1107 – Tam-O-Shanter Blvd at Merrimac Trl and continue along its regular route until Goosley Rd. Instead of turning left onto Leigh Rd. to serve Yorktown Square and Rivermeade Apartments (Stops 1329 and 1336), the route will continue on Goosley Rd. The two stops will be combined and relocated to the intersection of Goosley Rd. and Leigh Rd. on both sides of the street to allow for service in both route directions. The route will then turn left onto George Washington Memorial Highway to connect with the Yorktown Trolley at the York-Poquoson Courthouse.

To gather public input, WATA will host two public town hall meetings:

  • Tuesday, May 12 at 12:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 14 at 5:30 p.m.

Both meetings will be held at the James City County Library (7770 Croaker Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23188)

During the meetings, WATA staff will present the reasons behind the proposed route changes, the benefits of the WNTC, detailed information about proposed route changes, the timeline for implementation, and potential future service improvements.

Community members are also encouraged to review the proposed changes and submit feedback online at: www.gowata.org/200/Service-Changes

Input collected will help shape final decisions before any changes are implemented.
